Do you think you would reach your final destination? Would a GPS help you get there with less effort and less anxiety? Would it help you feel more confident about your trip?
It did for us.
I took our Canadian house guest, BB, to pick up his car, which had just arrived from Toronto. I knew the pick up location was ten miles away. What I didn’t know was the exact address or how to get there.
However, BB purchased a global positioning system (GPS) device last night. You simply input the address of your destination. Then the navigation system provides both audio and visual turn-by-turn instructions to guide you to your final destination.
Pretty cool, huh?
We have our own GPS to guide us to achieve success. We just need to activate it.
Most people are not aware of their own capability to guide themselves from where they are to their final destination. They tell themselves “I don’t know how to get there” or “I don’t know how to do it”.
Or even yet, they are unclear about what they are trying to achieve (i.e. their final destination). If that’s the case, then how will they know that they’ve arrived?
Now imagine having your own GPS.
Simply input your desired destination.
Calibrate with your starting location.
Then follow a systematic process to arrive at your final destination.
Let’s break down the story above into components that illustrate how you can apply the GPS concept in your situation.
1. What is your final destination for this trip?
This is much like asking where are you headed? Or what is your desired outcome?
In the example, BB conveyed that the pick up location was in San Leandro, ten miles away.
Imagine driving to San Leandro and wandering aimlessly for the pickup location. Not only would it be a waste of time and energy but at $4.60 a gallon for gas, there was definitely a better solution!
So BB called the auto shipper for the street address. Now we both knew exactly where we needed to be. We also knew that our journey would be deemed a success the minute we pulled up to the street address of the pickup location and BB received the keys to his car.
Success secret -» Have a clear vision of your successful outcome and how you will measure that you have ‘arrived’.
2. What is your starting point?
To pinpoint our starting point, the GPS device sends a signal to the sat»ellite. The satellite sends a signal recognizing where we are relatve to where we want to be. This ongoing process of gauging current location is critial to determining the distance and route to arrive at our final destination.
What is your starting point in your current endeavor? Are you starting from scratch, at the beginning? Or are you further along in your journey and need to re-calibrate? Do you have the knowledge and skills to achieve your objective? Or do you need to learn or access resources to augment your current capabilities?
Success secret -» Assess your starting point to gauge distance and generate options to move forward.
3. What do you do first?
Up to this point, we’ve inputted the street address of our destintion. We’ve identified our starting point. Now based upon our location and destination point, the GPS device maps the most efficient path by which to travel.
So based on our current location, driving north as our first step based on the informatin. By taking this first step, the GPS device could gauge our relative starting point to our final destination. Then guide us to the second step. Gauge where we are relative starting point to end point, then guide to third step and so forth.
In your current endeaver, decide on your first physical action given your starting point and ending point. Then incorporate the results from the first step to help you determine your next physical action and so forth.
Success secret -» Determine your next physical action and do it.
Use these three questions to activate your personal GPS. They will help you achieve what you achieve what you want faster and with less human effort.
Remember, your relative starting point changes as you take action towards your desired outcome. Focus on taking the next physical action to move you one step closer. Incorporate the results from that action to determine the next action.
All you need is a piece of paper and writing implement to get started.
So do it now. And let me know how it goes.
